Animal Sourcing in China: Benchmarking Study
Asia has long been a major source of NHPs for the biopharmaceutical industry. Currently, about two-thirds of NHPs used for clinical research are obtained from Asia, with about half of those coming from China and half from a variety of other Asian countries such as Mauritius, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The remaining one-third of NHPs used by Western biopharma industry are sourced from domestic sources in the US and Europe. This dynamic is changing dramatically in the near term, however, with China expected to soon become the major supplier of NHPs. This increased demand for Chinese NHPs reflects the fact that China is gaining market share at the cost of both other Asian countries and domestic suppliers. Today, China-based suppliers of NHP serve considerably less of the market than do domestic suppliers (28% from China versus 37% from domestic sources). By 2010, however, China is expected to supply 35% of NHPs to biopharma—an increase of 25% over current levels—whereas domestic suppliers as well as suppliers based in Mauritius and the Philippines are all expected to experience substantial reductions in their share of the NHP market (by 8%, 24%, and 20%, respectively).
